Beach Volleyball superstar, Brooke Sweat, has teamed up with Smoothie King to stay healthy and hydrated as she competes to be the beach volleyball world champion. Before she heads off to represent our nation, we caught up with Brooke in Cincinnati where she filled us in on her secrets to success in the sand.

Q: So you have a big summer coming up, how have you been training for it and how long?

A: Well, I’ve been training for beach volleyball for a long time, but for what’s coming up this summer, my teammate and I have been playing together for three years. From day one this has been our goal. Ever since we started practicing together, this has been our goal. So for the last three years.

Q: What’s your typical day look like?

A: Out in California, on a typical day, I’m out and practicing by 7:30 AM, practice for a few hours, head to the gym, meet with our strength and conditioning coach, get a good workout in, drive down to Huntington for my physical therapy. Then by the time I get back home it is dinner time then bed time.

Q: We have to ask: have you ever gotten sand in your eyes?

A: Yes! I’ve gotten lots of sand in my eyes, but we do wear sunglasses so it doesn’t happen that often. This morning was really bad, here in Cincinnati, because it wasn’t sunny so I didn’t have sunglasses on so sand was all in my face this morning.

Q: What are your go-to training tips?

A: Number one, be prepared and number two, be flexible. I like to have a plan set out, but at the same time I like to be flexible because you never know what’s going to happen. You don’t know, the weather might change, the team you’re supposed to practice against might bail, there are so many things that could happen so plan ahead but also be flexible and roll with the punches.

Q: Why is hydration so important to your training performance every day?

A: Hydration is so important to our training every day because we are out there just sweating and losing so much fluid. In order to not be dehydrated, we need to hydrate days before big tournaments, during tournaments and after tournaments. Hydration is something we do every single day.

Q: What is your favorite Summer Hydration Smoothie and Why?

A: My favorite Hydration Smoothie is the Strawberry Mango Hydrator. It just tastes so good!

Q: What challenges have you overcome to get to this point in your career?

A: The biggest challenge so far has been probably tearing my rotator cuff last year. It was right in the middle of Olympic qualifiers and I wasn’t in a position where I could stop and get surgery. I had to finish playing three tournaments so playing through those tournaments, getting some really important qualifying points and going through a surgery last year and then trying to bounce back this year and continue with the qualification process. It’s just been up and down the last few years so we’re just kind of embracing it now and moving on.

Q: What would it mean to you to make it all the way to the top of the field this summer?

A: It would mean so much to make it to the top. We’ve worked so hard, we’ve been through so much, we’ve had so many people supporting us on this journey. So not just for myself but for everyone that’s been there for me and supporting me. Living across the country from my husband and my family, it hasn’t been easy for anyone. I think it would just mean a lot to all of us.
