My family lives in Florida and, as lovely as being near the beach may be, the summer heat can make traditional workouts a challenge. Luckily, summer is the perfect time to break free from routine and embrace physical activity alternatives that involve the whole family. From the types of activities we pick to the way we refuel, there are lots of ways you can help your family get moving, stay cool and, of course, have fun!
Here are 4 tips to stay fit AND beat the heat this summer:
1. Get out at the right time.
When I go for a jog, I like to take my son in his jogging stroller and usually aim to start no later than 7:30 a.m. because of the heat. Depending on where you live, it is best to stay out of the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. since these are the times when the sun and heat is at its highest point. As another option, we also aim for an evening time of 6:00 p.m. or right after dinner for our nightly walks. If you have no other choice than to get outside while the heat is high, try aiming for a shaded area such as under trees or under a pavilion at a park.
2. Wear the right clothing.
If you are exercising or playing as a family outdoors, wear moisture-wicked fabric – stay away from cotton! You want to aim for breathable, lightweight or mesh fabric that allows sweating and keeps the body from retaining any extra heat. This type of fabric can dramatically enhance the body’s cooling process.
3. Stay hydrated no matter what.
Always make sure you have a water bottle in hand to keep up with fluid intake before, during and after any activity. How much additional fluid you need* can vary based on activity duration, amount of sweat and degree of heat and humidity. Speaking of hydration and water, choosing an activity around water, such as going to a water park or swimming, is also a great way to help cool things off!
4. Refuel properly.
After spending time outdoors we love cooling down with Smoothie King’s Berry Punch Smoothie as it has fruit and an electrolyte mix already added in. Other favorites of ours are the Veggie Blends Apple Kiwi Kale and Berry Carrot Dream, which also contain fruit, vegetables and electrolytes.
Why are electrolytes important? After sweating from physical activity or just being outdoors, your electrolyte levels will decrease. When this happens, the result can be muscle fatigue, dizziness, and sometimes nausea. With added electrolytes, these smoothies can help to replenish lost electrolytes so you and your family can enjoy the rest of the day.
No matter how you and your family decide to stay fit this summer, always aim to play it cool to get the most out of your time together. Share your family’s healthy summer fun with #smoothieking on social media!
